She finds a shocking truth Some unidentified person will go to any length to control the jockeys and the outcome of certain races. One jockey has died and others will follow. Syd is forced to accept help from police detective, Joe McQueen. He's drop dead gorgeous with the tenacity of a pit bull and the sensibility of a good ol' boy.
Unsure of placing her life and her future into the hands of a complete stranger, (McQueen), Syd sets out to find the answers and keep herself safe, knowing she's only one golden ticket away from her dream of riding in the Kentucky Derby, but in the next race, she'll be riding not only for her career, but also, for her life.

Syd is a young, accomplished jockey who is on the up and up at the racetrack. During her next race her close friend, GG, attacks her during the race. Syd defends herself as best she can while out on the racetrack, but the end result is the loss of a friend's life and accusations flying like bullets. Even when Syd speaks up she was defending herself, no one seems to listen. She delves deeper into the mystery of GG attacking her and begins to uncover a conspiracy of bribes, fixed horse races, and threats to find the truth behind her friend's untimely death.There's a bit of intrigue between the pages of 'Ruffian' I found myself enjoying. While the interactions between Syd and McQueen are slow on the start, they eventually become more satisfying as the story continues. I particularly loved the description in the beginning when Syd is talking about being out on the racetrack with Pinata and gunning for the finish line. I could taste the dirt flying in the air and all but see the desperation of trying to survive when she was fighting with GG to stay on her horse.
The mystery does jump around a bit during the first 1/3rd of the book. While I didn't find anything particularly wrong with the story, the transition during once scene had me frustrated. Syd was being attacked by two male jockeys and had turned to her friend GG for comfort. Only after I got towards the end of the chapter did I realize Syd was remembering an incident in the past rather than talking about the present. Other than that complaint, it's a fairly good book. I read it in a couple of sittings, so it's not too long.

I enjoyed the story and mystery. Looking forward to more books by this author. I tried to drag it out but found my reading it quickly
A great suspense story set in the horse racing scene. This is by a great new author, I had a hard time putting it down.
This book is a quick read that keeps you captivated to the end.
I love reading about a strong female character, think Kinsey Milhone, who sleuths through peril to arrive at truth. A friend tells me that Ruffian is similar to Dick Francis and Felix Francis horse racing and sports mystery. Guess I'll try a Dick Francis book while I wait for the follow up to Ruffian.
A great read! I found it interesting and quick paced. Hard to put down. It's about 2 of my favorite subjects, horses and a strong woman character.
Looking forward to more books by this new up in coming author.
I really enjoyed this book. Plenty of humour, great storyline and a likeable lead character. I would enjoy reading more of this author's work.
I enjoyed the book very much. It was a fast read because I couldn't wait for the next chapter to see what will happen to Syd next. What I most enjoyed was the author's sense of humor when pitted against life threatening circumstances. She goes about life telling people what they want to hear and all along (in italics) she is thinking about what she really thinks. I was familiar with the area in which the story takes place. It was fun to reminisce about the Santa Anita Race Track and the Los Angeles Freeway system.
